Swinging for gold at Umhlali

Joan Solms and Sue Ellis took gold with 70 points, followed by Lou Field and Caroline Best (68 points) and Shelley Sykes and Mandy Morgan (67 points).

The Umhlali Country Club women’s combined stableford competition proved a popular format last week, drawing a strong field.

Scoring at the top of the leaderboard was close throughout, providing an exciting final few holes for the duos in contention.

Joan Solms and Sue Ellis took gold with 70 points, followed by Lou Field and Caroline Best (68 points) and Shelley Sykes and Mandy Morgan (67 points).

In the monthly medal competition held the week before, the women were split between three divisions and placed by their net score.

Jenny Church won the Silver Division with a net total of 72, also scoring the best gross on the day with an 86.

In the Bronze Division, Caroline Best narrowly edged out Frances Tremearne and Jane Hall in a count-out, after all three women scored a net 72.

Debbie Meyer finished first in the Copper Division, which uses points instead of score, with her total of 37 a comfortable three-point winner.
