Fun on the greens at Umhlali Country Club

Umhlali's women golfers enjoyed a very popular 'tombstone' challenge.

Rolling the rock and draining putts, Umhlali Country Club’s sporting teams have enjoyed fierce competition recently.

In the past few weeks, the club’s bowlers have lit up the greens at the Local Real Estate challenge and Duncan Draw on February 9 and 14 respectively.

The team of Clive Nicosia, Dorothy Wynne, Lyle Cronje and Mike Coningham held on for the win on February 9.

The winners of the Duncan Draw held on February 14 were Sheila Fabricius, Faye Pedlar, Dennis Dicks and John Randall (visitor) with Wayne Duncan (far left) representing the sponsor.

Sheila Fabricius, Faye Pedlar, Dennis Dicks and visitor John Randall took the gold medal the following week.

Last Thursday, Umhlali’s women golfers enjoyed a very popular ‘tombstone’ challenge.

Ailsa Drummond and Gerda Kaljee were two victims of the tombstone format!

The format adds one’s handicap to the par of the course, giving players a set number of shots that they could play on the day.

If they exceeded the shot limit, they had to ‘tombstone’ in place, with winners judged on how close they got to the final hole.

Winners of the Local Real Estate meet, played on February 9. were Clive Nicosia, Dorothy Wynne, Lyle Cronje and Mike Coningham, with sponsor representative Clint Wahl (centre).

The challenge made for fun times on the course as players slowly dropped on the course’s latter holes.

Ladies’ captain Jenny Church took the win, holding a putt on 18 to be the only player to finish.

Jill Bullock and Sue Ellis both reached the final green to take second and third place, with Aileen Peacock finishing 4th at a distance of 53m from the flag.
