Bodyboarders take over Salt Rock

A strong crowd supported an even better showing from the bodyboarders.

From first time competitors to national champions, the North Coast Board Riders and Gliders (NC-BRAG) bodyboarding competition saw talent at every skill level.

Held at Salt Rock main beach on Saturday, 41 entrants faced off across three categories – the rookies, intermediate and pros.

A strong crowd supported an even better showing from the bodyboarders who dealt with tough conditions on their way to the finish.

In the rookies section, Kaelin Krimm rose above the rest to grab his trophy, followed by Chad Storr, Connor MacLachlan and Brendan Roodt.

Ethan Sharples won gold in the intermediate, with Wes Singleton, Jack Lawson and Dale van der Merwe in the chasing pack.

Nick Westman scored the wave of the day, a 9.0, on his way to first place in the pros category.

Adam Waites, Warren van der Merwe and Mark McCarthy took the remaining top four spots.

The event was spurred on by a brand new crowdfunded R15 000 sound system, while NSRI volunteers gave up their time to provide water safety.

“Thanks go to McCarthy Toyota, Mac’s Fish and Chips, Singlefin, CivEc, Laser Space, SolidO2, SaxonVil and HomeSchool, all of whom helped with the sound system or on the day,” said NC-BRAG’s Wayne Duncan.

Bodyboarders will compete again on May 13 and July 15, after which club champions in each category will be announced.
