Top golf effort in support of orphans

The first of two North Coast Courier Orphan Fund golf days teed off at Umhlali Country Club last Thursday.

More than 60 golfers teed up for a good cause last week at the annual North Coast Courier Orphan Fund Golf Day.

Played at Umhlali Country Club last Thursday, the event drew golfers of all talent and skill levels, united by their drive to raise money for the Orphan Fund.

For those who did not get an opportunity play, you can still join in on the fun when the second golf day kicks off at Simbithi Country Club this Thursday, April 20.

Leanna Dynan hits a perfect drive up the left side of the first fairway.

Together the fundraisers will contribute towards the Orphan Fund’s mission of helping NGOs that specialise in looking after orphaned and vulnerable children within the Courier’s distribution area.

But of course, there was the small matter of scorekeeping to focus the fourballs throughout the day, as well as a few hole-specific prizes too.

Three of the four ladies who finished second in last year’s event went one better, as Glenda Hickman, Paddi Reich and Shirley O’Halloran added Ailsa Drummond to find a winning formula.

Stephen Frizelle, Johnny Mutton, Ralph Schroder and Terence McMurray.

They won with a mammoth score of 97 points, winning on a count-out ahead of second placed Dagmar and Michael Lauterbach, Tracylee Raison and Joan Solms, who also grabbed 97 points.

Monique Gresse, Chris Morris, Cameron Andrews and Andre Conradie rounded out the medalists with 94 points.

Picking up spot prizes as they went, Joan Solms and Geoff Goble won the longest drive competition on the 5th and 17th holes respectively.

Second place finishers Dagmar and Michael Lauterbach, Tracylee Raison and Joan Solms. Solms also claimed the prize for longest drive on the 5th hole.

Not to be outdone, Andrews ended closest to the pin on 18, while Courier managing director Pieter Naudé hit a peach into the 6th hole for the second closest to the pin award.

“It was a fantastic day out, with golf played in perfect weather. Thank you to all who played and the sponsors who contributed, we look forward to seeing you all again on Thursday!” said Orphan Fund co-ordinator, Charmaine Premlall.
