Japanese grandmaster lauds Tongaat karate championship

Thabiso Ramalitsi walked away with the men's kumite open title, while Justin du Plooy emerged as the men's open kata champion.

Japanese karate grandmaster Murakami Shihan was impressed with the high level of skill demonstrated at a Tongaat karate championship at the weekend.

Shihan attended the 2023 Kanazawa Cup tournament at the Tongaat Sports Centre on Saturday, which saw 450 karateka from across the country in action.

“I have been coming here for the past 10 years, except during Covid-19 pandemic, and every time I see the young stars displaying improved fighting skills,” said Shihan.
He also performed a karate display.

Gauteng fighter Thabelo Kekana makes contact against Ballito’s Saien Naidu.

Thabiso Ramalitsi walked away with the men’s kumite open title, while Justin du Plooy emerged as the men’s open kata champion.

Aishwaria Ramnarain was crowned the women’s open kata and kumite champion.

Junior male kata and kumite champion in the boys division was Jared Atkinson, with Zia Pillay claiming the girls kata and kumite honours.

In the cadet division Jayan Nair won the boys’ kumite division and Nyska Jagessur the kata and kumite girls titles.
