Striders’ development team run Comrades for a good cause
The fundraising run for Summerhill House is hopefully the first of many that provide real outcomes for the communities that are selected.
The Dolphin Coast Striders development team will join hands to uplift their community when they run this year’s Comrades to raise funds for Summerhill House.
As the marathon fast approaches, so too does the completion of a third house on the Summerhill House property in Etete, which will open space for another six orphaned children.
It continues the fantastic work done by the orphanage, which has directly helped hundreds of Etete residents in its more than 15 years of operation.
The Striders’ development runners, a group of 20 sponsored athletes at the club, have chosen the worthy cause as this year’s fundraising effort.
Athletes have long been sponsored by the running club, but a wider programme has recently been implemented so that the runners can uplift the communities from which they come.
“The club has agreed to sponsor 20 athletes, which includes help with transport, shoes, kits and race entries. But we wanted to see a bigger involvement in the communities, so that the athletes can motivate the next generation of runners,” said the Striders’ Andrew Erasmus, who oversees the development programme.
The fundraising run for Summerhill is hopefully the first of many that provide real outcomes for the communities that are selected.
Summerhill House thanked the runners for the partnership and their generosity in the fundraising process.
It is hoped that R20 000 can be raised as part of the effort and just over R3 000 had been reached at time of print.
