Tinley Manor karate brothers a class act

Their dedication to their craft has not only earned them KZN and Protea colours but has also seen them compete on the global stage in many counties.

The Links brothers, Joshua and Xander, displayed exceptional skill and determination to return with three medals from the national Arnold Classic karate tournament held in Roodepoort last month.

Undeterred by the challenging field, the Tinley Manor duo brought their A-game to reach the finals.

Xander, a force to be reckoned with, claimed the gold medal in the Kumite in the U21 category, which Joshua followed up by clinching a silver medal – also in the Kumite – in the 16-17 Juniors age group.

Not content with just one medal, Joshua also earned a bronze in the Cadet Boys 14-17 team Kata division.

The journey of the karate brothers began in 2010 when a young Joshua, merely three years old at the time, and six-year-old Xander joined Shotokan Karate-do International South Africa (SKISA).

Under the guidance of 7th Dan master Renshi Brando Pillay and Hanshi Sonny Pillay (9th Dan), the duo swiftly ascended through the ranks.

Joshua boasts an impressive 1st Dan black belt (Shodan), while Xander has attained a 2nd Dan black belt (Nidan).

Throughout their karate journey, the brothers have consistently competed in both Kata and Kumite events, amassing an enviable collection of medals since 2013.

Their dedication to their craft has not only earned them KZN and Protea colours but has also seen them compete on the global stage in many counties such as Australia, Indonesia, Croatia, Spain, Britain, Namibia and Botswana.
