Umdloti yachtsman takes on MSC Week
This year, a long haul sail is also on the cards for the first time, providing a different challenge from the typical short bursts.
Umdloti’s Brad Rayson will hope for plain sailing while captaining the yacht Dual Flyer in the highly anticipated MSC Week over the next few days.
The MSC Week is an annual yachting competition hosted by the Point Yacht Club since 1976, which will this year see 23 yachts take on a week of sailing challenges between July 3 and 7.
Rayson is in charge of Dual Flyer, which will compete directly against three other yachts in the multihull class, with the remaining 19 yachts split between the L26 Nationals and ORC Nationals classes.
His crew had a chance to fine-tune their race set-up in the Commodore’s Cup on Sunday, which was a warm-up race designed to allow the teams to acclimate to conditions.
As is typical in Durban winter, conditions look good and the stage is set for an exciting week of racing.
Dual Flyer was beaten to the Commodore’s Cup line by fellow multihull Ladybird, and Rayson will be keen to get revenge when it matters in the coming days.
The format of the week is condition dependent and race officer Kevin Bingham has the freedom to host as many as 12 individual races.
Yachts will launch from the Durban harbour before rounding a set of obstacles off the coast in differing orders depending on the individual race set-up.
This year, a long haul sail is also on the cards for the first time, providing a different challenge from the typical short bursts.
