Ballito cyclist ready for Commonwealth challenge

Junior cycling in South Africa is for riders who turn 17, 18 or 19 in the current season, which means Liebenberg is often competing against older and more experienced athletes.

Ballito’s Miles Liebenberg is already one of the country’s best junior cyclists and it is only his first year in the junior age group.

The 16-year-old Ashton International College pupil will have a chance to test himself against the world’s elite young cyclists at the Commonwealth Youth Games in August.

He is part of a four-strong cycling team that will travel to Trinidad and Tobago, only two of whom will compete in the road race event.

The road race is Liebenberg’s best discipline and he was crowned the KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) junior champion and runner up in the South African Junior Championships this year.

He has added podium finishes in the junior category at the Cape Cycle Tour, Tour du Cap, Herald Cycle Tour and Emperor’s Classic to find form at the right time before taking on the Caribbean.

Junior cycling in South Africa is for riders who turn 17, 18 or 19 in the current season, which means Liebenberg is often competing against older and more experienced athletes.

Riders will typically race on a 15-30km course, doing laps until they reach a total distance of about 110km.

Liebenberg will also compete in the time trial event, which is a flat-out sprint over a distance of around 35km for the junior men.
