Grassroots coaching at Tongaat inspires future footballers
Maidstone FC has been a cornerstone of youth sport in Tongaat since 1940 and the current crop of coaches are hoping to improve on past successes.
Tongaat’s young footballers had the opportunity to learn from some of the town’s best coaches on Saturday.
As part of an ongoing series of clinics, coaches affiliated to the Maidstone Football Club hosted an open training day in Maidstone.
Around 80 future stars aged seven to 15 came to learn from some experienced campaigners and have a fun day out.
The initiative was started by head coach Dennis Chetty in an attempt to reintroduce grassroots football in the area.
“Junior football has largely been ignored in recent years in light of Covid-19, the unrest of 2021 and the devasting floods of 2022. More than ever, we need our youngsters to be involved in a positive, community driven programme out of which we hope a formal academy will be formed,” said Chetty.

Chetty was joined by seasoned coaches Ramu Khomarsany, Kola Govender and Chillies Chirwa, while a number of younger coaches hoping to complete their badges also joined to learn.
The clinic will continue throughout the year and is free to attend.
