Tayler and Zedde continue gold rush with more surfing wins

Both delivered yet another victory on the South African Surf Tour, claiming the U14 and U12 boy's titles at the fourth Rip Curl Grom Search in Port Alfred.

The surfing duo of Nathan Tayler and Marcello Zedde are fast becoming household names on the North Coast.

Both delivered yet another win on the South African Surf Tour (SAST), claiming the U14 and U12 boy’s titles at the fourth Rip Curl Grom Search in Port Alfred last weekend.

Tayler has won four of his past five events to vault up the SAST leaderboard and now sits atop it for the first time this season.

His timing could not have been better with just four stops left on tour before age group national champions are crowned.

Huge swells greeted the youngsters as they arrived to compete in the Eastern Cape for the second time this year after the Nahoon Open in East London in May.

Tayler claimed his second win of the season at the Nahoon Reef and clearly feels comfortable in the east coast waters.

Last week proved no different as Tayler absolutely dominated his competition on an unbeaten run to the gold medal.

In his first heat, either of his 7.0 and 7.8 scores would have been enough to win, but combined they left him over eight points clear of the pack.

The semi-final was no different as he delivered scores of 8.0 and 6.1 to finish almost 10 points ahead of Malachi Wolmarans in second.

Rounding off a perfect event, Tayler coupled a massive 9.24 with a 6.7 to reach his highest tally and claim a comfortable gold medal victory by five points.

It leaves him 340 points ahead of Ben Esterhuyse in the overall rankings.

Zedde took no time to find his feet this season, winning the first four events out of the gate.

A fourth place and second place followed, but he has been back to winning ways at his past two events to leave him 1 350 points ahead of fellow iLembe rider Sean Tayler in the overall standings.

And it was a comfortable weekend in Port Alfred for him too.

In the semi-final, he scored 10.26 to win by more than five points ahead of Luc Jackson.

Zedde improved his scoring in the final with a 12.64 which proved more than enough to claim the trophy, with Jackson again in the silver position.

The final Grom Search event will be surfed at St Francis’ Seal Point at the end of September, while three other SAST events will decide the national champions.
