Rugby legends unite for memorable day at Oaklands Equestrian Estate

Before the main event, the Dolphins U13 team offered a glimpse into the future by defeating the formidable College Rovers U13 side.

Local rugby fans turned out in numbers to support the annual Madalas vs South African Legends match at Oaklands Equestrian Estate on Saturday.

The experienced players may have lost speed and gained weight, but they nevertheless displayed some slick moves of old.

The Legends team boasted several former Springboks and Sharks players such as Jean Deysel, Skipper Badenhorst and Skholiwe Ndlovu.

Ballito Dolphins Rugby Club chairman Mark Svenningsen said the Legends appeared as if they had been practicing and playing together for years, even though they only come together two or three times annually without any formal practice.

“Describing the game as physical would be an understatement, with many players nursing sore bodies at the end. Post-game recovery involved equal parts of beer and voltaren,” said Svenningsen.

Legends player Tikey O’Dell tries to stampede his way through the opposition.

Legends won the match 54-32, keeping the spectators engaged throughout.
