Ballito marksman Afzal Moosa earns his shot at glory

Marksmen compete over five days of target shooting which tests both accuracy and agility, as they need to reload as they move through the course and shoot around obstacles.

Ballito’s Afzal Moosa will take his shot at global glory in the upcoming IPSC Shotgun World Shoot in Thailand.

Moosa is one of four KZN shooters who qualified, alongside Yacoob Moosa, Clyde Millingham and Kusch Harsoo.

All four began training together in 2018 with a view to qualifying for the world championships in 2020.

Covid-19 delayed the event until this year, but remarkably the group has kept their level of competitiveness consistent enough to qualify together as originally planned.

The IPSC Shotgun World Shoot in Pattaya from December 4-8 is the highest level of ‘practical shooting’ in the world and is one of three disciplines alongside handgun and rifle shooting.

Marksmen compete over five days of target shooting which tests both accuracy and agility, as they need to reload as they move through the course and shoot around obstacles.

They are marked on both accuracy and speed.

South Africa’s only medallist on the world stage is Carlo Belletti, who claimed silver in the super senior age group in both 2012 and 2015.

Moosa and the rest of the group will no doubt want to add to that tally as they face an expected field of around 200 from across the globe.

“Our standard semi division is strong, but we are ready to give our best against the world’s top competitors. We have something they don’t, we’re Africa tough,” said Moosa.
