Salt Rock father and son develop young goalkeepers
The Bowes have organised goalkeeper clinics over the years, with plans underway for another one at Simbithi next month.
Football flows through the veins of father-and-son team Sheldon and Liam Bowes, who are devoted to developing young goalkeepers in Salt Rock.
Having migrated from Johannesburg, the duo is actively engaged in diverse coaching programmes along the North Coast.
At the age of 18, Liam faced an abrupt end to his playing career as a goalkeeper for the Black Aces development team because of a serious injury.
He also played for the Moroka Swallows and Mamelodi Sundowns development teams. Undeterred by the setback, Liam joined forces with his father to mentor budding goalkeepers.
“The love I have for the sport never died. The only way I can share my passion now is by helping someone else improve as a goalkeeper,” said Liam.
Sheldon, a former Benoni Northerns players in the 80s, holds a SAFA level 1 coaching certificate with a focus on goalkeeping courses.
Together, the Bowes have organised goalkeeper clinics over the years, with plans underway for another one at Simbithi next month.
They especially want to focus on identifying and supporting young talent in the townships.
“There are just too many young boys with amazing talent, but no one is paying attention to them,” said Liam.
