Young cricket stars in fine form at nationals

There is certainly an exciting future for cricket on the North Coast!

Four exciting junior cricketers from the North Coast recently tested their talents against the country’s best.

Ayush Pundit (Darnall Primary), Zack Bruyns (Ashton International College Ballito), Cameron Kock and Matthew Ivey (both Umhlali Prep) were selected for the Dolphins in last week’s U11 Gauteng Cup.

Pundit played for Dolphins Blue while the other three played for Dolphins Green in interprovincial T20 games held at schools across Krugersdorp. Dolphins Blue team manager Yusuf Bhorat also hails from Ashton.

The teams each played two matches daily for three days after which they played for overall positions on the final fourth day.

The North Coast cricket contingent, Yusuf Bhorat (manager), Ayush Pundit, Cameron Kock, Zack Bruyns and Matthew Ivey.

Bruyns was the top scoring North Coaster, racking up 65 over five innings, including a 40 against the Mpumalanga White Rhinos. Ivey was the top bowler, claiming eight scalps, followed closely by Pundit with seven.

After the first three days of competition, the Blue team progressed to the final against Eastern Province while the Green team played in the 5th/6th playoff against the Mpumalanga Black Rhinos.

Darnall’s Pundit saved his best cricket for the biggest stage, notching an impressive 33 off 25 balls in the final to finish as the second top scorer in the team.

His batting heroics would help to propel the Dolphins Blue to the overall win as they claimed the final by 25 runs.

There is certainly an exciting future for cricket on the North Coast!
