Dawnheights Cricket Club claims double victory

The 1st XI and Veterans team have both enjoyed strong starts to the 2025 season.

Dawnheights Cricket Club enjoyed an unbeaten weekend with both their 1st XI and veterans team claiming convincing victories.

The vets were first in action in Durban on Saturday against Tongaat Vets, the latter of which won the toss and chose to bat.

A first wicket stand of 48 set the early tone, but Mags Iyer had other ideas. The Dawnheights bowler sliced through Tongaat’s top order, registering figures of 5 for 16 in his six-over spell. The men from KwaDukuza were able to limit Tongaat to just 118.

Mags Iyer was the chief destroyer in Durban.

In-form Rajen Naidoo and Mohamed Mather opened the batting in response and quickly went about chasing their total. Rajen notched his fourth fifty of the season, ending on 78 not-out, and Mohamed added an unbeaten 28 at the other end to earn a decisive 10-wicket victory.

The 1st XI was in action the next morning against Umlazi, playing at home in Gledhow.

Dawnheights were put into bat after losing the toss, and opening batsman Sumit Singh went about making them regret their decision.

Rajen Naidoo grabbed his fourth fifty of the season.

He played a brilliant knock to end on 89 not-out and set up a defendable score.

The bowlers followed suit and tore through the Umlazi ranks to grant the home team a 28-run bonus point win.
