Ballito teen claims MMA Youth World Champs bronze medal

Ballito had two fighters and a coach in action in Abu Dhabi.

Rising Ballito MMA star Travis Cuthbert fought his way to a bronze medal at the recent Youth World Championships in Abu Dhabi.

Held by the International Mixed Martial Arts Federation, the event drew over 1 000 U17 athletes to the Al Ain Convention Centre from July 20-27.

Seventeen-year-old Cuthbert earned a spot among the medallists in the Youth A super middleweight division, despite only picking up the sport six months ago.

“The experience was one-of-a-kind,” said Cuthbert.

“Many hours of training and learning fighting techniques have paid off. I’m just so appreciative and grateful to all the people who helped me.”

Travis was joined by fellow Ballito athlete Luke de Beer (16), who finished a respectable seventh in his highly competitive division.

“It was an amazing experience to represent my country. The event was well run and professional. Nothing can top the feeling and the event,” said De Beer.

“I’m beyond grateful to be part of their journey,” said Lino (34), who is also the current EFC women’s flyweight champion.

“The heart, grit and composure Travis showed was unreal. Him medalling is a moment I’ll never forget,”

Lino also praised De Beer and said the international exposure will improve his overall fighting acumen.

“Luke gave it his all. The experience has lit a fire in him to come back stronger next year,” said Amanda.

“I want to thank the Warriors Gym team who’ve helped shape and sharpen these athletes. To say, ‘I’m proud’ is an understatement.”
