Dawnheights stalwart Adhir Maharaj earns Dolphins veterans call-up
Maharaj has been part of the KwaDukuza club since it was founded in 1985.
Dawnheights Cricket Club all-rounder Adhir Maharaj has been selected for the Hollywoodbets Dolphins over-50 veterans’ squad for the upcoming interprovincial tournament in Benoni in May.
The call-up marks a significant moment in a cricketing journey spanning more than four decades. The 49-year-old, who has been part of Dawnheights CC since its founding in 1985, described the honour as humbling.
“I am extremely proud to represent my province,” said Maharaj.
“This is a reward for many years of commitment to the sport, and I am grateful for the opportunity. I am thankful to my family, Dawnheights and my trainer, Neerasha Kalicharan, whose support and guidance make it possible for me to compete at this level.”

Beyond club level, Maharaj was previously selected for the South African Veterans Invitational team. In 2024, he played against Namibia and Zimbabwe for the over-40 SA invitational side. He hopes his journey serves as an example to his son, Ayaan (8), who is following in his footsteps.

“I want to set a positive example for my son. He is a budding cricketer, and I want to teach him the value of hard work, discipline and commitment,” he said.
One of Maharaj’s fondest memories is batting alongside his father, Prem, during a match in which he scored a century. He hopes to one day share the same experience with his own son.
“I hope to play for as long as I can, so that one day he can experience those same special moments with me.”
Despite his age, hanging up his boots is not on Maharaj’s mind.

“If I can stay fit, enjoy the game and contribute to the team, I want to keep playing. Retirement will come in its own time but for now my focus is on competing and making the most of every opportunity on the field.
“I would like to thank my wife, Diksha, for her years of support and for allowing me to play all these years. I am deeply appreciative of her.”
Dawnheights treasurer Suveer Maharaj said he was proud of Adhir’s achievement.
“His commitment to Dawnheights and the sport has been outstanding. This honour is richly deserved,” he said.
