Ballito MMA pioneer Morné Swanepoel honoured by MFC
Swanepoel has been active in training and staging events since the 90s.
A Ballito martial arts pioneer has been honoured for decades of contribution to MMA in South Africa.
Morné Swanepoel (54) was recognised for his lifelong impact on the sport at an awards ceremony in Durban earlier this month.
Swanepoel received the prestigious award from Maximum Fighting Championship (MFC) during the MFC 134 Resurgence Fight Night, held at the DLI Hall at Greyville Racecourse on April 4.
MFC, South Africa’s longest-running MMA promotion, has played a significant role in the growth of the sport locally, having staged the country’s first-ever no-rules MMA event in 2000. The organisation honoured Swanepoel’s decades-long commitment to developing and promoting MMA, not only in South Africa but across the African continent.
His martial arts journey began nearly five decades ago. He started training in 1976 as an amateur wrestler and became a full-time martial arts practitioner, combatives specialist, functional fitness trainer and life coach in 1990. Today, he is recognised as one of the most highly qualified high-performance MMA, Brazilian jiu-jitsu and combatives coaches in the world.
He is the owner and head coach at CombatCoaching.com, a Ballito-based gym offering internationally recognised high-performance martial arts training, self-defence programmes and fitness coaching across multiple disciplines.
Reflecting on the honour, Swanepoel said the recognition was deeply meaningful.
“I am humbly honoured with this award, knowing my lifetime commitment to the martial arts is being recognised by my country,” he said.
“It has been a long, tough journey introducing MMA to South Africa on an internationally recognised level more than 30 years ago.”
