Local paddlers McGregor and Vogt unstoppable in surfski showdown

Another Ballito paddler won the singles race to complete a clean sweep.

Hank McGregor and Keegan Vogt led a dominant local charge at the Aliwal Shoal Surfski Challenge, securing victory in challenging ocean conditions.

The pair conquered the South Coast seas at the fourth edition of the Leatherback Rum Aliwal Shoal Surfski Challenge at the Ocean Festival 2026 last Sunday.

Multiple world champion, Hank (48), teamed up with world championship medallist, Keegan (17), to produce a commanding performance in the long course (13km) doubles race, securing victory in an impressive time of 53:33.

The duo, racing together for the first time, proved untouchable as they surged ahead of the field to claim gold at Scottburgh Main Beach on May 3.

“We had amazing conditions with a bit of swell to launch through, so the race organisers decided on a deep-water start,” said Keegan.

This year’s introduction of a doubles format added a fresh layer of strategy and teamwork, with paddlers navigating challenging surf launches and unpredictable offshore conditions through the iconic Aliwal Shoal Marine Protected Area.

Vernon Vogt powering his way to a hard-fought victory last Sunday.

In the long course singles race, it was another Vogt leading the charge, as Vernon Vogt (49), Keegan’s father, claimed top honours in 57:30 after a fiercely contested battle.

The race delivered particularly close competition, with Vernon locked in a three-way battle for much of the course.

“It was tight racing between me, Bryce Lawson and Sibusiso Zulu, all taking turns to take the lead,” said Vernon.

“On the turn, it was just Sibusiso and me all the way to the finish, but I had a clean run to the beach and took first place.”

Event organiser Barry Lewin emphasised the deeper significance of the race within the broader Ocean Festival, highlighting its conservation focus and the unique experience it offers.

“To paddle through Aliwal Shoal is something truly special. It’s an opportunity to experience the ocean in a way that builds respect for it. The race was a really fitting way to end a weekend that celebrates everything the ocean represents.”
