Historic double for North Coast soccer stars

This is a unique achievement to compete in six prestigious SAFA sanctioned tournaments and win all of them.

Fancy footwork has helped a North Coast soccer team claim an historic double.

Supersport United Soccer Schools’ (SSUSS) North Coast U10 Team won the South African Football Association (SAFA) Durban Central Local Football Association (DCFA) Knock Out Cup Final to achieve the “Double,” as the previous week they had won the U10 League.

The team is made up of players from the North Coast who attend Ashton College Ballito, Crawford North Coast, Umhlali and Curro schools.

During the season the team also won several fivea-side tournaments, these included the Westville FC Cup, Toti FC CUP, Juventus FC Cup and the SAFA DCFA Cup.

This is a unique achievement to compete in six prestigious SAFA sanctioned tournaments and win all of them.

Three players were selected to go on trial with the Supersport United Junior Academy and traveled to Johannesburg last Thursday, these include Rocco Rocha from Umhlali Prep and Jonathan Dayani from Ashton International College Ballito.

The SSUSS team has a reputation for sportsmanship, evidenced by a recent fair play decision by their coach, Peter Hooper. “SSUSS scored a goal in the SAFA DCFA U10 Cup Final on a bounce ball when the Juventus Goalkeeper missed the pass from our player, referee allowed the goal, I intervened and told them to retake the bounce ball, at that stage the score was 0-0.”

SSUSS won many friends that day, even receiving letters from the other team’s parents congratulating them on their true spirit of sportsmanship.

As Hooper said, winning is not everything – developing young players is what they are all about. Hooper encouraged any youth between the ages of 5 and 14 years old to come and join them.

“Our aim is to build future football stars for South Africa, not just focusing on the few who show extraordinary talent – but getting everyone involved and developing together.”

Next year SSUSS will field two teams per age group – their traditional SSUSS team as well as a Supersport North Coast development team to help those who are just ‘finding their feet’ on the soccer field.

The team of young superstars is set to hit the field again this weekend, when they host Supersport United Junior Academy, Westville FC and Juventus FC in a ‘Futebol De Salao’ (5-a-side) and conventional outfield grass tournament at Ashton International College Ballito on October 7 and 8, showcasing some of the best youth soccer players in South Africa aged 8 and 9.
