Shake, twirl and tap at ‘Shall We Dance’

Featuring close to 100 of KZN's dancers, this year's show is sure to dazzle, inspire and impress

The glittering annual showcase of fancy, fast-footed dance magic will be celebrating their 25th season this year as Shall We Dance (SWD) returns to The Playhouse Opera stage from September 8 – 17.

Featuring close to 100 of KZN’s dancers – from as young as eight years old to family groups to top international award-winning professionals – this year’s show is sure to dazzle, inspire and impress.

One of the ladies shaking it up in the belly dancing section is the Ballito Pro event organiser and Ballito resident, Collette Bundy, who has been rolling her hips since 2011.

“I have always loved dancing and have been fascinated with middle eastern belly dance for a while. I decided to do a six week course and loved it,” said Bundy, who is taking part in the show for the first time.

“I am taking part under the Maya company and SADTA and I am so excited to be selected to take part, although it does require a lot of hard work and dedication.”

She said belly dancing has given her a new sense of self.

“Belly dance allows women of all ages and sizes from all walks of life the freedom to express themselves and gives them the sisterhood that goes with it. It has made me appreciate that all women are beautiful and it has made me less body conscious.”

On the professional dancer side, the versatile performer Ryan Hammond, who has wowed crowds in the SA version of Strictly Come Dancing, will be back with his new partner, Angelique Allison with their award winning Latin American style that got them crowned in the recent SA Latin Championships.

Making a welcome return, SA’s Professional Ballroom champion Penwell Nhlapo is back and this time he has Lindelwa Mankangeni on his arm.

The duo has been dancing together for six months and have multiple ballroom awards individually. Most recently, they were crowned the champions at the SASOL Championships in Mpumalanga. The final professional team were crowned the grand finalists in the British Championship last month.

Fresh from the UK, Gerhard van Rooyen and his new partner, Micheline Marmol will exhibit the thrilling dance style of Adage.

Both have various Blackpool and World titles on their CV.

This year’s SWD will feature a strong, Spanish element as the flamboyant dancers from the Linda Vargas Spanish Dance Company returning for an exciting event.

The well-experienced duo of dance veterans, Caryl Cusens and Neville Letard, join forces for their 25th year as joint directors. They have co-ordinated featured styles of the ever-popular ballroom and Latin; as well as ballet; belly-dance; tap-dance; Irish, Spanish and modern.

Returning as MC is East Coast Radio’s Damon Beard.

Evening shows start at 7:30pm and matinees at 3pm. Tickets are available from Computicket and start from R90.
