Sehr gut, ja!

In true Springbok German style, Wartburg-born twins, Desiree and Lynell Bünger grew up helping their mom, Hannalie and grandma Helga prepare Butterkuchen and Stollen.

Their culinary skills are now in high demand and enjoyed by tourists from all over the world who come to visit The Vineyard in Ballito Guest House, which they have been managing for the past 11 years.

“We started baking on the side, offering guests freshly baked cakes and biscuits with their afternoon coffee.

“The German baked goods were always the favourite, so the owner of The Vineyard, Naomi Meyer taught us how to make the more intricate specialities such as Black Forest Cake,” said the 34-year-old Lynell who is the baker, while her sister is the chef.

Word quickly spread about their traditional German baking and they soon started getting orders from locals and guests from Cape Town, Christmas time being their busiest baking period.

“Our international guests are so surprised when they see us baking Syrupskuchen and Lebkuchen.

“The Germans in South Africa are definitely much more traditional than those in Europe!”

While they are happy to chop and knead all day at work, once they get home the kitchen stays cold.

“Cooking is the last thing we want to do at home. Woolies is our home chef.”

When the sisters are not busy in the kitchen, they enjoy watching the Fast and the Furious, reading romance novels, exploring coffee shops and feeding their Instagram pages.

“I am part of a group of Instagramers who go on outings and take photos. We recently went to the Drakensberg with the N3 Gateway Tourism Association to try out the local canopy tours.

“We then submit our photos on Instagram and if you are lucky a page like Instagram SA shares your pics,” said Lynell.
