Floors with personality
Ballito's Redd Tile general manger Daniel Maistry said this year's flooring trend is an interesting fusion of retro meets classic.
This is the year to let your floor be the eye catching wow factor in a room as 2018 is all about being bold with colour – from the bottom up.
Ballito’s Redd Tile general manger Daniel Maistry said this year’s flooring trend is an interesting fusion of retro meets classic.
“Trends are set overseas, starting with fashion, filtering into furniture and then into floors. This year, we are seeing bold colours and patterns coming through which might be a shock at first for the traditionally conservative KZN customers, but you just need to be a little brave,” said Maistry.
Look out for the following trending looks:
1. Colour blocking
Last year was all about the feature wall. This year your feature is the floor.
“The classic Portuguese azulejo tiles are getting a face lift. The traditional mixed patterns are staying, but the original blue and white tiles have been swapped out for retro pinks and greens and other bold colours. These tiles are often used in bathrooms or kitchens, but are also popular for patios.”
In general, Maistry said dominant colours like turquoise and teal are in, as well as retro pinks, purples and even yellow is filtering through. Dark, rich colours are also going to be popular.

2. Natural textures
The earthy feel is here to stay.
“Natural stone like marble and travertine is making a come back in a big way. In 2016 and 2017 SA politics were volatile and as a result people did not want to spend a lot of money on their homes as they feared property values would drop.
“When people started voicing their opinions and changes came about, so confidence in spending increased, so marble sales have increased in the second half of 2017 and will keep on doing so this year.”
If you prefer a warmer feel, wood-look tiles, laminate and vinyl flooring is a classic contemporary look that will stay.
3. Concrete-look tiles
“Screeting is already yesterday. Now it is about creating an artisan feel with cement-look tiles that have a texture to them to make them look like they were handmade.”
4. Go big
“When it comes to tile size, the bigger the better.”
5. Forget straight
Wooden floors are coming out with diagonal patterns to create a slightly off-kilter look that is sure to add some texture and edge to the traditional wooden floor.
