Award-winning Ballito author publishes new children’s folk and fairy tale collection [WIN]
Titled ‘The Singing Turtle & other Folk & Fairy Tales’, the book includes a wide variety of stories, from the ‘The Princess and the Pea’ to stories from Africa, India and China that Western audiences may be less familiar with.
Fairy and folktales are passed down through the generations, capturing the curious magic of the human condition.
Award-winning Ballito author Dianne Stewart holds these tales close to her heart and her latest book is a collection of children’s tales from around the world, beautifully illustrated by Heidi-Kate Greeff.
Titled ‘The Singing Turtle & Other Folk & Fairy Tales’, the book includes a wide variety of stories, from the ‘The Princess and the Pea’ to stories from Africa, India and China that Western audiences may be less familiar with.
The multi-genre author, who has published more than 35 books, said she spent a lot of time delving through dusty library archives searching for the right stories to include.
“I wanted the book to include those that had not been included in my other folktale collections, ‘The Zebra’s Stripes and other African Animal Tales,’ ‘Folktales from Africa’ and ‘The Guinea Fowl’s Spots and other African Bird Tales’.
Stewart said she enjoyed the challenge of giving each tale a fresh appeal for today’s audiences while still conforming to the original text.
“I am grateful to my publisher, the Puffin imprint of Penguin Random House and to God for the opportunity.”
Albert Einstein once said: ‘If you want your children to be intelligent, read them fairy tales. If you want them to be more intelligent, read them more fairy tales.’
