#MovieReview: Quantumania, the blandest acid trip in history [Watch]

Ant-Man is one of the most charismatic characters in the MCU - enough to grant him three solo movies - but even Paul Rudd's immensely likeable shtick has limits.

Ant-Man and the Wasp Quantumania is fun enough if you are willing to go with its tone, but certainly does not leave you desperate for five more years of the franchise.

Quantumania is the latest in an ever-growing list of Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) movies which lessen in quality at every new release.

Pumping out two or three movies a year for 15 years was always going to wear thin.

It was initially an exciting experiment, one that paid off in full when the series confronted the original big bad of Thanos in Avengers: Endgame.

Endgame pulled together years of careful story and character building for a satisfying conclusion, but it has since limped towards the introduction of a new unifying evil force.

Said villain, Kang the Conqueror, finally made his screen debut in Quantumania but despite an excellent performance from Jonathan Majors, has left excitement levels pretty low.

Ant-Man is one of the most charismatic characters in the MCU – enough to grant him three solo movies – but even Paul Rudd’s immensely likeable shtick has limits.

Couple this with a movie that is almost completely shot on green screen and relies on middling CGI and you have another bump in the road rather than a significant momentum builder.

Majors (Last Black Man in San Francisco, Creed III) is a fantastic actor and deserves every chance to shine, but he is going to have to contend with dwindling interest from the MCU audience going forward.Spoilers to follow

Quantumania follows superhero Ant-Man, who is living happily with his extended Pym family after most world-ending threats were snuffed out by the Avengers.

Alas, the entire group gets sucked into the ‘quantum realm’ after a science experiment gone wrong.

The family have to work together to find a way to escape, but are forced to contend with the aforementioned Kang in order to do so.

There are all manner of wild and weird creatures in the quantum realm, including a returning Corey Stoll as a giant mechanical head.

You will need to give in to the humour of the movie, or you will grate at every visual joke.

If you are willing to do so, Quantumania is ultimately harmless, but is that enough from the world’s biggest franchise?

Rated PG-13 for violence and language.
2.5/5.
