#MovieReview: Extraction 2 dials up the action to 11 [Watch]

Chris Hemsworth returns for another high energy action romp.

Extraction 2 is two hours of pure kinetic action filmmaking hung on a paper thin plotline.

Chris Hemsworth returns as black ops legend Tyler Rake, a name just shy of parody for B-movie action, and is again near invincible while taking on an army of attackers.

In Extraction (2020) – Netflix’s most watched original movie at the time – Rake infiltrated a kidnapping ring in Dhaka, Bangladesh, to save the son of an Indian druglord.

Morals are secondary to money in Rake’s shady underworld operations and anyone in his path is fair game.

This is nothing new of course, bullets bounced off Rambo, John McClane, Jason Bourne and Bryan Mills long before Hemsworth was weighing up his post Thor career.

And you will not be surprised to see a series of clichés first honed in 80s action cinema.

But Extraction 2 is undeniably enjoyable if you are willing to forget about the real world and let the high quality set pieces wash over you.

Much like the John Wick franchise, Extraction is directed by an ex-stuntman, Sam Hargrave, which lends an authenticity to the action that surpasses most other copycat movies.

Although Hargrave and Hemsworth sounds like an expensive shop on the high street, the output of this duo is far from buttoned up elitism.

Extraction 2‘s fight scenes are gritty and ugly as much as they are viscerally engaging.

There are some truly memorable set pieces too, which include perfectly choreographed uncut shots where the majority of combat appears to have been done in-camera (without digital effects).

This is what will stay with you once the end credits roll, because the actual story is basically incoherent but largely inconsequential.

Some of the dialogue is so bad that you may laugh out loud, but Hargrave is shrewd enough to leave little space between the action for exposition.

Hemsworth appears to have found his non-Marvel action franchise and will likely appear in more of these should the reception warrant further sequels.

As a mindless escape for two hours, it works pretty well.

Some of the action is pretty gruesome however, and will not be suitable for younger audiences.

Find it on Netflix.

Rated 18 for Intense Violence and Language.
3/5.
