Thrifty Umdloti twins raise tour funds

The fundraising event was held to help raise R115 000 to get twin brothers Ryan and Blake Herselman to Argentina on a hockey tour.

Everyone loves a bargain, and Saturday night’s ladies’ sip and thrift evening in Umdloti truly had something for everyone.

The last in a series of fundraising events to help raise R115 000 to get twin brothers Ryan and Blake Herselman to Argentina with the rest of their Northwood Boys hockey teammates, produced a splendid evening of community, friendship, wine sipping and, of course, shopping for used items at discounted prices.

“People love thrifting. It’s good for the environment, gentle on people’s pockets and allows people to revamp their wardrobes without breaking the bank,” said host Christy Herselman.

All the clothing and accessories were donated by friends, community members and small businesses who have been rallying to help the boys get to Argentina.

Even some of their old pre-school teachers showed up to support the boys, now in Grade 9.

Enjoying an evening of friendship and community are Keri Miller, Ros Toerien and Laraine Deeb.

With prices ranging from R15 to R150, there were bargains galore to be discovered and people walked out with much more than they ever would have imagined, at a fraction of retail value.

Even the R50 entrance fee was a bargain as it included a free glass of wine and entry into a stacked lucky draw.

Trish Dahl, Lynsey Hammond and Gillian Jevon show off the bargains they found.

Learning the value of hard work to achieve goals, Ryan and Blake were actively involved in the evening. In preparation they helped with the enormous task of sorting and pricing countless items and on the night they were mingling and serving patrons.
