Community effort restores Sheffield Beach Road’s scenic charm

The Dolphin Coast Conservancy elected to clear the road as one of its main projects for the year.

Community support and a bit of elbow grease have returned Sheffield Drive to one of the most picturesque in town.

The road had become overrun with Silver Oak (Brachylaena) and overhanging foliage posed a danger to road users while obstructing scenic views.

Luckily for residents, the Dolphin Coast Conservancy picked it as one of their projects for the year and got to work.

“The work was quite tedious and difficult, as the root systems all had to be maintained, to prevent erosion on the slopes,” said Conservancy chair, Di Jones.

“We therefore cut the branches but left the root systems intact, and painted the stumps to ensure no regrowth would occur.

“Our thanks are extended to the team from KwaDukuza Parks and Gardens, who diligently collected all we had cut and left on the verges.”

Jones said a community-donated chainsaw made a big difference, as did monetary donations towards the cost of the work. The work even prompted a few residents of the road to sign up for Conservancy membership.

“We feel the road is much safer for all road users, especially pedestrians, as visibility around the sharp bends is now perfect,” she said.

“We are sure visitors over the festive season will make Sheffield Drive a ‘must see’ part of their route – as the ocean views are exceptional!”

Conservancy members picked the project as their favourite of 2024 at their recent AGM.

If you would like to see the new and improved views, there is no better place than to do it from the bench at the southern end of Sheffield Drive, which was donated by Conrad Inspired Furniture.
