Two Ballito stars to perform in Shrek musical at new Durban North theatre

Lilihle Mtshali and Rosie White will both be part of the production that christens the new Milkwood Theatre.

Two young Ballito performers will light up the stage in the upcoming Shrek-themed musical at Durban North’s new Milkwood Theatre.

Lilihle Mthembu and Rosie White are part of a 35-strong cast in the upcoming production, which is staged by the KZN Young Performers’ Project (YPP). Lilihle is playing the role of the Fairy Godmother, and Rosie is playing the role of Young Princess Fiona and Baby Bear (alternating performances in both roles).

YPP puts on one performance annually and hosts auditions across the province, primarily casting actors from local junior and high schools with the occasional post-matric or adult included.

This year the performance has been moved to the brand new Milkwood Theatre at Danville High School, making it much more accessible for North Coast audiences.

Based on the beloved Shrek franchise, the musical will feature Lyle Buxton in the titular role, with James Armstrong as Donkey, Chloe Marot as adult Fiona and Damien Butt as Lord Farquaad.

Lisa Bobbert heads the production team as director and set designer, alongside Evashnee Pillay (choreography), Des Govender (musical direction), Anthony Govender (sound design) and Kathy and Dominic Singery (costumes, set and prop build).

“YPP is a structured programme designed to nurture performing arts talent from senior primary school level, to post matric and beyond,” said music director Des Govender.

“We are delighted to open the year with Shrek – it is such a feel-good story loved by young and old. Our project is all about supporting each other’s initiatives, so we very consciously wanted to be part of the excitement and brave act of opening a brand-new theatre space.”

There will be twelve performances from April 25 to May 4, with tickets available via Webtickets.
