Feel Good Friday: Doctor raises over R140 000 for UKZN students
Dr. Sizwe Zungu used his entry into Africa’s oldest 100 mile road race to raise funds and give back to future doctors.
AN anesthesiologist has raised more than R140 000 towards registration fees for UKZN medical students.
Dr. Sizwe Zungu, a UKZN alumnus, decided to use his entry into this year’s Washie 100 Miler, the oldest 100 mile road race on the continent (161km), to raise funds and give back to future doctors
The 43-year-old Westville resident completed the ultra-marathon from Cathcart to East London in July.
A member of the Chillie Runners Club, Zungu explained that the fundraising initiative was facilitated by the UKZN Foundation.

It formed part of the Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery (MBChB) Class of 2006’s 20-year reunion celebrations, which include giving back to the institution that helped shape their careers.
“When I first thought of taking on this ultra-marathon there was a definite feel of excitement in overcoming the challenge and apprehension in the fact that people might not be forthcoming. I was overwhelmed with the generosity of all my colleagues and people who donated to the cause.
“My target was R100 000 but I surpassed that and I know this will assist medical students in need. As a UKZN alumnus I always feel you should think what you could do for other students in need. When I started my career I had someone who helped me without expecting anything back and I hope this honours not only their generosity but everyone who contributed to helping another student realise their dream of becoming a doctor,” he said.
Zungu, who has six Comrades Marathons and three Two Oceans Marathons to his name, said he hopes to inspire others to chase their ambitions while also giving back.
In his professional journey, Zungu completed his MBChB degree at UKZN, he also holds a Diploma in Anaesthetics (DA), a Master of Medicine in Anaesthetics (MMed), and the Fellowship of the College of Anaesthetists of SA (FCA).

Beyond medicine and sport, he is passionate about arts, music and culture, interests that continue to enrich his personal and professional life.
