Library’s fate uncertain

The fate of the Durban North Library hanged in the balance last week when it was discovered that the lease had expired.

THE fate of the Durban North Library at Kensington Square hung in the balance last week when it came to the attention of ward councillor, Dean Macpherson, that the lease had expired.

Upon receiving the news, Macpherson arranged a meeting with the libraries, real estate and the landlords to discuss the matter.

“There are concerns from the council about the building, however, it appears that a resolution is being sought and we agree that the best, and only, location for the library to remain, is its current location,” Mapherson said. He added there will be ongoing negotiations around the matter. “Hopefully we can get all parties to agree so the library remains where it is.”

The deputy head of Libraries and Heritage Department, Guy Redman, said the Durban North Library lease agreement has been negotiated and a report has been submitted to the Bid Adjudication Committee to approve the agreement.
