LGE 2026: Positive start to special voting in north Durban

North Durban residents who cast Special Votes said the process went smoothly and that there was improved efficiency from the IEC.

RESIDENSTS across North Durban cast the first ballots in the 2026 Local Government Elections as Day 1 of the special votes got off to a positive start.

According to the Electoral Commission close to 99% of Voting Stations opened on time at 08:00.

Special voting commenced at 08:00 and is expected to conclude at 17:00 today and tomorrow (November 3).

Northglen News visited voting stations in Ward 34 and 110, with residents who cast their Special Votes saying the process went smoothly with an improved efficiency from the Electoral Commission.

Here’s what some of them had to say:

Rochelle Jooste (Ward 110): “The whole process was super easy and convenient for me. I was in and out in not even three minutes. I encourage people who are registered and who may be sitting on the fence to come out and vote on Wednesday.”

Mariola Pawelczyk (Ward 110): “It went perfectly. The reason I applied is I’m a tourist guide and I’m going away on a business trip. It would be impossible for me to vote there so I’m very pleased I could vote earlier. I’ve never tried it before but it was very easy.”

Graham Everton (Ward 34): “It was my first time applying and it was a painless process. Registration was easy as was casting my vote. The IEC staff were helpful, they explained the process. I just had to look for the party I was voting for.”

Anil Beekrum: “Every vote counts, people who don’t vote can’t complain when service delivery issues affect them. One vote lost can actually make a huge difference. My one piece of advice is for those who are voting to ensure your ballot papers are stamped.”

Xolisa Nzinya: “It was easy to figure out and the IEC staff were helpful. If I get a chance again I prefer to do a Special Vote.”

A total of 678 525 voters will cast special votes with Kwazulu-Natal recording the highest provincial figure with 143 714 approved home visits, followed by Gauteng
