Durban women walk the talk for breast cancer awareness
PinkDrive's latest awareness event in Durban North highlighted the importance of early detection, with 59 breast examinations conducted.
SCORES of women dressed in shades of pink joined PinkDrive for a 2km walk and wellness event aimed at raising breast cancer awareness.
The walk held on Thursday morning started at 07:00 at The Riverside Hotel, headed to Blue Lagoon before returning to the hotel. Along the way, the women attracted attention as passing motorists sounded their horns in support.
October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and this year’s theme was “Every story is unique, every journey matters”.

PinkDrive marketing and events co-ordinator Janice Benecke said the event reflected the importance of recognising that every person’s journey is unique.

Describing the event as a success, Benecke said, “We educated 88 guests, did 59 breast examinations, with four referrals.”
She said the event also helped raise awareness among men. “Ten males were educated and had a delicious buffet breakfast. All in all, a good day.”

Simangele Mbatha, who attended with her women’s group, said the walk left her feeling refreshed. Mbatha thanked her friends Sweleni Hlongwa, Tholakele Ngomane and Bongiwe Ngema for encouraging one another to take part in the PinkDrive event.
“I feel lighter and refreshed,” she said. “It was definitely the best decision to take part and it helped to raise awareness.”
The morning concluded with breakfast and socialising before the women continued with their day. Benecke also showed attendees how to perform breast self-examinations, encouraging them to take an active role in their breast health.
