Fitness athletes gear up for Natural Olympia.

IN recent years, bodybuilding has had an unfortunate reputation when it comes to steroids. But the sport of natural bodybuilding is trying to change that. Natural bodybuilding is a movement with various competitions that take place for bodybuilders who do not use performance-enhancing drugs. This includes anabolic steroids, insulin, diuretics and human growth hormones. The sport has been gaining momentum internationally and now even boasts a South African chapter of the International Natural Bodybuilding Association (INBA).

Two local residents, Gill Holm and Talya Kimberley, are part of team of South African’s bound for their very first Natural Olympia in San Diego. For Gill, the decision to enter the fitness world has helped her live a healthier lifestyle. “It all started with watching my sister-in-law compete at one the local shows and it really motivated me to get into fitness,” she explained.

Though she’s new to the sport, Gill has already notched up some impressive performances at the IFBB KZN novice where she finished third and the KZN East Coast Classic where she bagged second place in the over 35 category.

Her KZN teammate, Talya has also enjoyed recent success in the bikini division and said the chance to compete overseas was a dream come true. “This whole experience has been a huge learning curve, but it has been a fulfilling journey so far. The chance to compete on the international stage, even if it was just for the experience, would be worth it,” Talya said.

The duo though need to secure sponsorships in order to travel to San Diego for the Natural Olympia. If you would like to help sponsor email info@naturalbodybuilding.co.za or contact Talya on 082 858 8711 or Gill on 082 937 6132.
