Police oppose bail

Two of the three suspects arrested on 22 October have been granted bail by Verulam Magistrate's Court.

THE couple that was arrested at King Shaka International Airport on 22 October, for the possession of drugs, and the woman arrested in the Point area, have appeared in court.

The three suspects appeared in the Verulam Magistrate’s Court for their bail hearing. The bail hearing was finalised on Thursday 7 November.

Police opposed bail in the matter and led evidence that it was not in the public’s interest to release the suspects on bail.

“We felt that the public lost faith in the system when those accused in drug cases were released back into society after their arrest. Our detectives led evidence for two days in this case to convince the court to decline bail on all three accused,” said provnincial SAPS spokesman, Col Jay Naicker.

The court granted Lindy Walker (28) and Abel Hermanus Du Plessis (29) bail of R100 000 each, with strict conditions. They will still remain in custody until they can come up with the money. Sibongile Mthembu (36) was not granted bail.

“We are pleased with the court’s decision. The case has been postponed until 11 December to allow the police to conduct further investigation,” Col Naicker added.
