Solution for Chartwell Drive in sight

DA ward councillor says nine speed humps are proposed for Chartwell Drive.

THERE is good news for Chartwell Drive residents. Last week uMhlanga ward councillor, Heinz de Boer, met with eThekwini Traffic Authority (ETA) manager, Eugene Naidoo, and ETA officials, to hand over a list of the top 10 priorities in the uMhlanga area that require serious attention.

This included traffic calming measures on Ridge Road, a call for an extension of the pavement on William Campbell Drive leading towards La Lucia Mall and the resurfacing of a number of roads in the area.

“After a successful meeting, the ETA agreed to traffic calming measures, in the form of speed humps on Chartwell Drive. The possibility of nine speed humps were proposed,” he said.

De Boer added a recommendation would be sent to the city manager’s office and said he was confident of a positive outcome. “This has been a long-standing problem for residents and I’m glad there is a final resolution at hand. If all goes to plan, construction should begin in the middle of next year.”

De Boer added the call for speed humps on Village Way were rejected.

“Village Way is seen a category four road or feeder road so speed humps and traffic circles are unlikely to feature,” he said.

According to senior manager of traffic engineering at the eThekwini Transport Authority, Nkosinathi Dube; “Village W ay is not warranted for installation of speed humps and due the vertical alignment of the road, does not support traffic circles.”

Newport Avenue was also listed as a prime candidate for traffic calming measures due to the constant speeding.
