Cyclists complete ultra ride for charity

Mr Price charity cyclists raise more than R75 000 for charity so far. That number is expected to grow.

PLENTY of team spirit and countless hours of training and preparation enabled twenty avid cyclists to complete one of South Africa’s most gruelling charity cycling rides, the Ride for RedCap recently.

The weary cyclists arrived to an excited crowd of well wishers at the Mr Price head office after cycling from Johannesburg to Durban in less than 48 hours.

It’s a phenomenal achievement for the cyclists as the two day endurance ride features a stage longer than any one day stage of the Tour de France.

“There were a few punctures and mechanicals, but otherwise it was another brilliant Ride for RedCap,” said Kelvin du Sart, the Mr Price Sport Cycle Club chairman, who is responsible for the logistics and the safety of the riders.

“The cyclists were highly motivated by everyone’s support and the encouragement from friends and family as well as the support received on Twitter. The Durban Metro Police were brilliant all the way from Botha’s Hill to Durban. Everything went to plan and I’m a hundred percent happy with how the ride went. We’ll all definitely be back next year!”

The endurance ride is in it’s fourth year, and was previously known as the Double Triple Charity Challenge. Proceeds raised for the cycle ride will be channeled into the RedCap Foundation, specifically the JumpStart Programme. As the programme’s name suggests JumpStart aims to give jobless matriculants a ‘jump start’ in life by helping them become skilled and employable.

Last year an incredible R115,000 was raised for the RedCap Foundation’s JumpStart programme and already over R75,000 has been raised during this years two day cycle with more donations still to be processed.
