Bowling over his teammates
NGN talks to one of Hollywood Bets Crusaders leading wicket takers this domestic season.
WHEN Pakistan’s legendary paceman Waqar Younis, was asked what are key to every fast bowler’s arsenal. He replied that one needs pace, skill, accuracy, aggression, courage and most importantly calmness or big match temperament.
One Durban North youngster and former Northwood School Old Boy has oodles of all those talents and has been making a name for himself on the local scene. Hollywood Bets Crusaders quick Kyle Morrison has been one of the standouts of this season’s Castle Premier League. His performances have helped the team reach the summit of the league, a position not unfamiliar to the seven time champions.
But the 23-year-old is quick to point out the club’s number one position comes down to a strong work ethic. “The team is a good mixture of youngsters and seasoned players at the moment. I think it offers a different perspective and different energy. Everyone’s contributed and all the lads make newcomers feel welcome which is important for any successful team,” he said.
Another facet to the quickies success has been time spent Down Under playing for the Redlands Tigers in Brisbane and a once-off game for the Brisbane Heat in the KFC T20 Big Bash League. He even had a chance to train with the Aussie team after winning a competition for the fastest ball bowled. Morrison clocked 143km/h on the speed gun.
“Playing in Australia was a fantastic experience. The Tigers have been around for more than a 100 years and it was exciting playing for a club with so much history. It provided me with invaluable experience,” he said.
The Sunningdale resident urged locals to come down and support the Crusaders as they take on Topham Cricket Club on 7 December.
