Appeal to help rebuild raised education centre

Honorary officers asks public to come and visit the reserve and donate plastic garden chairs, fold up trestle tables, tarpaulin panels, display cabinets, cupboards and help with printing and laminating.

EDITOR- WE have had a terrible catastrophe and need help. On 20 February, in the middle of the night, arsonists burned down our precious Education Centre at the Beachwood Mangroves Nature Reserve in North Durban.

As you are probably aware through all our advertising in the diary dates, the reserve is cared for mostly by volunteers who put in every spare cent, and second, outside of their working lives. We never charge for it, because our aim has always been to show people about the remarkable eco system there and to educate them about the importance of conservation in the oceans and wetlands. With the loss of our Education Centre, all our audio visual stuff has been burned to dust.

Every brochure, every poster, our banners, all our tables, chairs, books, displays – years and years of accumulated data and information is now ash. The North Durban Honorary Officers of EKZN Wildlife will not give up though. We are determined to keep our cause going, but we need help.

We’re asking the public to come and visit the reserve as normal on the third Saturday morning of each month, but this time we also ask anyone who can donate plastic garden chairs, fold up trestle tables, tarpaulin panels, display cabinets, cupboards, or even help with printing and laminating – to come and chat to us as well.

Even a kettle or an animal print table cloth would be a huge blessing. Wildlife books or anything nature related – anything and everything relevant would be most appreciated, as we have lost everything we had.
