Debora pens second book

NGN talks to local children's author Debora Lingwood who has penned her second book.

IT was La Lucia mother of two, Debora Lingwood’s longing for South Africa that inspired her to write a children’s book while in a meeting in Canada. And thus her first children’s book, Matt, The Dragon Slayer was born. It is a story about a little boy who overcomes his fear of the dark with the help of his mother’s creativity and his own imagination.

In 2010 Debora and her family left their lives in Dundee behind to start a new life in Canada.

“My husband and I worked at a church in Canada for a year. While we were there I missed South Africa so much. While we were in a meeting at church the idea of a little boy fighting his fear randomly popped into my head,” she said.

“I never thought of being an author, nor have I ever had any training in writing, but in 30 minutes the story of Matt, The Dragon Slayer, was born.”

When she finished her first children’s story, Debora couldn’t help but think she cold actually write: “I showed the story to one of my friends, who burst into tears and urged me to get it published. It was her husband who then helped financially to get the book to Word Alive Press, the publishing company who agreed to do the illustrations, marketing and selling of my book.”

Debora finally found an outlet for her to cope abroad: “Writing the first book opened up doors for future books and before I knew it, The Skateboard came about.”

Her second book, The Skateboard, is based on her son, Caleb. “I dedicated both my published books to my children, Caleb and Shannon.”

The same publishing company again agreed to publish her second book. It is about a boy whose future doesn’t look bright, until he gets a gift from another boy that changes his life forever.

“I know it’s a cliche, but being able to write children’s books is a gift from God. I’ve always had a passion for children. My love for writing, God and children have all come together in the form of these books,” she said.
