Thousands turn out for ‘sole’ful race for charity
More than 2 000 pairs of shoes collected and more than a 1 000 runners participated in the 100m barefoot challenge for charity.
MORE than a 1 000 people bared their soles for charity on Saturday as local NGO Grace Aid hosted the 100m barefoot challenge. Participants were urged to donate new pairs of shoes which would be distributed to different charities around KZN (more than 2 000 pairs of shoes were donated). The NGO is also awaiting confirmation from Guinness World Record head office to see if they broke for the biggest number of barefoot runners in a 100m race.
Grace Aid director, Dave Richter, said he was overwhelmed by the turnout. “It was a day of fantastic fun and I was amazed by the generous spirits of all who participated. Well done to the people of Durban and supporters of Grace Aid, you rock,” he enthused.
Richter said they now have to courier all video, photographs and witness statements to Guinness proving the world record had broken.
“We called Guinness in London head office and they confirmed that the current record is 529 people. The total on Saturday was 1 159, 630 over the current record,” he said.
He added Grace Aid would love to host this sort of event again especially in view of the spirit of the participants and their generosity for others.
