Cop murder: Arrest imminent
Police are confident that they will arrest the alleged killer of Capt Basil Naidoo that was shot and killed in an attempted house robbery in March.
IT HAS been more than a month since the murder of Greenwood Park policeman, Capt Basil Naidoo who was brutally killed. His alleged killer has been on run ever since, but according to SAPS spokesman, Lt Elvis Naidoo, they are hot on the wounded man’s trail.
Greenwood Park SAPS spokesman, Lt Elvis Naidoo, said police managed to track Capt Naidoo’s cellphone, that was stolen during the shootout, to a man in Durban’s central business district.
“When the investigating officers confronted the man, he told police he bought the phone from foreigners. Police then questioned the foreigners who sold the phone, but no leads were forthcoming,” Lt Naidoo said.
Lt Naidoo said he was confident that an arrest is imminent.
Capt Naidoo was shot dead on Friday, 14 March during an armed robbery attempt at a complex on Riverside Road. Two suspects confronted the owner of one of the units after he opened the door to let his cats out. The suspects also assaulted a gardener who was sweeping the driveway at the time, they then tied him up alongside the owner of the house.
The brazen duo then confronted the owner’s wife who was asleep and hit her over the head with the butt of a gun. She managed to free herself and call 10111, the police emergency line.
The robbers ransacked the house and were piling items into the owner’s car when they were confronted by Capt Naidoo.
A shootout ensued and one of the suspects was shot dead. Capt Naidoo died of a fatal gun shot wound to the head. The second suspect is still at large and was reportedly shot in the leg.
