Fraud quartet arrested in uMhlanga

Police believe the men were planning to defraud a well known bank of R12-million.

FOUR men believed to be part of a fraud syndicate were arrested at Coastlands Hotel in uMhlanga yesterday. Members from the Provincial Tracking Unit arrested the quartet aged between 30 and 56 following a tip-off that the suspects were in the process of trying to defraud a major bank of R12-million.

Capt Thulani Zwane, SAPS provincial spokesman said the men had booked in the hotel using a fraudulent credit card. “Further investigation traced the credit card to a UK resident. Three of the four men flew in from Johannesburg, while the fourth, a car guard, lives in Durban.

“After searching their rooms we found two fake South African identity documents. One of the fake ID’s belonged to a Nigerian national while the other belonged to a car guard. We believe the suspects were planning to use the car guard’s fraudulent identity document to defraud a bank for a substantial amount of money,” he said.

Zwane said the men will appear in the Durban Magistrate Court later today.
