Former resident making waves in Canada

Former residents, Janine Godfrey, just won the British Columbia Amateur Body Building Association's (BCABBA) Western Canadians masters bikini category.

A FORMER uMhlanga woman is making a big name for herself in the bodybuilding world after winning the British Columbia Amateur Body Building Association’s (BCABBA) Western Canadians masters bikini category.

Janine Godfrey, a Danville Park Girls’ High School old girl and mother of two, said her journey began when she, her husband and two boys moved to Vancouver, Canada about two and a half years ago.

The executive assistant for The Keg Corporate Head Office said after arriving in Canada she was feeling down: “And not having any family or friends in Canada I decided to get back into the gym, and found the best, and well respected coach, and personal trainer, Dawn Alison from Fit Body. I informed her my goal was to get lean, enter my first bikini body building competition, which was what I did, and I achieved my goal.”

For Janine being able to change her body and build it up naturally and seeing the changes is a remarkable feeling and achievement.

But like any other sport, it doesn’t come without its challenges: “Since I am a sweet and chocolate addict, I have to be focused on my meal plans for competing. It’s very difficult, but if you have your goal insight, you can achieve it.”
What motivates her most is being fit and healthy. She added that having people ask her for help, and how she did it, was quite rewarding as well.

This blonde bombshell has been married for 11 years to her high school sweetheart and local Durban boy, Warren: “We met when we were only 16. We have two gorgeous boys, Jared (10) and Clinton (14). My family are my biggest supporters and fans.”

For Janine having a great support system makes reaching her goals all the sweeter: “They encourage me to achieve my goals, and my husband enjoys seeing me happy and wanting more out of the industry. I thank my husband every day for the support and encouragement he provides, since it is an expensive sport and requires discipline.”

When asked what advice she had for others who want to get fit and healthy, Janine suggested that they try to have a fitness goal in mind or in sight: “That would be your first priority, work towards achieving your goal which would be a constant reminder why you started the fitness routine in the first place.”

In August she will be competing in Winnipeg, Manitoba in the World Qualifiers, which allows competitors to compete for a pro card, which would allow her to compete all over the world.
