SPCA sleepover raises more than R200 000
More than 25 Durbanites braved the cold for a night and slept in the kennels at the SPCA’s premises to raise funds for the association.
THE Durban & Coast SPCA say they were blown away by the support shown at their fifth annual Kennel Sleepover fundraiser this past weekend.
More than 20 Durbanites braved the cold for one night and slept in the kennels at the association’s Springfield Park premises in order to be ‘bailed’ out (R5000 minimum) to give back to animals in need.
The sleepover coincided with International Homeless Animals Day (August 15), a day to educate people about homeless and abandoned animals.

A total of R222 500 was raised for the association which is celebrating 130 years of service.
Durban & Coast SPCA marketing manager Tanya Fleischer said this total surpasses the R169 000 raised at last year’s event.
“We are blown away by the generosity of our guests and sponsors this year! What a fantastic way to celebrate 130 pawsome years! The funds raised will go towards the animals in our care when they need food, blankets, medical treatment; we also allocate funds to keeping our inspectors on the road,” Fleischer explained.
A number of north Durban residents also participated in the event, including La Lucia resident Gail Cuttler who raised the most (R25 652) on her own.
While the sleepover fundraiser is over, the association said it would now turn its attention to its calendar competition.
