Bad spell for baby vervets in Durban North

Marlo, a vervet monkey is lucky to be alive after being attacked by a dog in uMhlanga yesterday.

MONKEY Helpline, a local non profit organisation (NPO) dedicated to rescuing vervet monkeys across KwaZulu-Natal, received two emergency call outs in Durban North, yesterday regarding baby vervet monkeys in distress.

Their first call out, which involved a baby vervet monkey that had been hit by a vehicle on Effingham Road in Redhill, ended in tragedy, as the animal rescue team could not locate the injured creature. After inquiries they were told that the tiny monkey was dead and had been carried off by pedestrian.

The passionate animal lovers later responded to an incident where another baby monkey had been attacked by a dog in First Avenue, uMhlanga. They managed to save the primate baby and affectionately named him Marlo.

According to Carol Booth, of the Monkey Helpline, Marlo’s arm was badly broken during the attack and he has some bruising on his chest, but their dedicated vet will be able to pin his arm.

Update to follow.
