‘Second place is like coming first to me’

Little rider vaults to silver place at SA Pony Champs.

SHE was handed the reins of her first pony at the age of seven. Fast forward four years later and Stephanie Atherton shows no sign of giving up the pastime she has grown to love.

The Umhlanga College student recently took part in the SA Pony Champs, held at the Kyalami Equestrian Park in Gauteng. It’s one of the most prestigious showjumping events of the year for pony riders.

Stephanie finished second in the 90cm championship class on her pony Magic Rambo and helped the KZN team to finish second overall.

“I was really happy with my performances. I came there to do well and win but I’m super proud of my achievements. Second place is like coming first to me,” she enthused.

This was the 11-year-old’s second appearance at the SA Pony Champs, placing first at last year’s event in the 70cm class.

“It was a great team performance and to work hard and be recognised for that is awesome.”

She added a key aspect of the sport was having a good relationship with your horse. “It’s the relationship between horse and rider of total trust that brings success,” she said.
