Blaze destroys building in Springfield Park

Firefighters battled the blaze for more than four hours.

COMMUTERS traveling on the N2 were horrified when they spotted thick black smoke billowing into the air and polluting the sky early this morning.

Witnesses reported that the fire involved a DIY kitchen renovation company near Inanda Road, in Springfield Park . The fire started at approximately 5.30am. Firefighters battled the blaze, which lasted more than four hours.

Brian Jackson, operations manager of Blue Security said, “The building was engulfed in flames when he arrived at the premises. The fire department arrived at the scene and took over and secured the area to ensure the safety of the public.”

Andreas Mathios , of SA Can, confirmed that four fire trucks were dispatched to the scene to help contain the fire. “The fire completely consumed the building. When I left the scene at approximately 8am the blaze was still burning. The sad part is that many people will be without jobs, because of the fire,” said Mathios.

At this stage no injuries were reported and the cause of the blaze is still unknown.
