uMhlanga shopper rips out wiper in road rage incident

Verbal altercation over parking space leads to malicious damage to property.

ROAD rage is again in the spotlight after another incident in uMhlanga at the weekend. What started as a verbal altercation ended with an irate driver ripping off the rear windscreen wiper of another motorist in yet another fight over a parking space. The incident occurred at Gateway’s undercover parking on Saturday.

It’s believed the altercation arose after one of the drivers, who claimed he had seen the spot first, parked his vehicle. Lt Raymond Deokaran, spokesman for the Durban North SAPS, said both men had claimed they had seen the parking space first.

“The man decided to take out his anger on the vehicle of the motorist who allegedly upset him. He then bent the rear windscreen wiper backwards and snapped it off,” Deokaran, explained. “Road rage is increasingly common. This latest incident is being investigated but it will not be the last,” he said.

Deokaran warned motorists against driving aggressively and to beware of other aggressive drivers.

“Road users all have a responsibility to cool the emotional temperature on the roads,” he said.
